Basket Quilt and Mini-Dwellings WIP from Grandma's Red Needle

I'm still waiting for the quilting thread! SIGH!
The 'problem order' made it through US Customs and has made it to France! Scheduled to arrive next week.
Meanwhile; progress on the Basket quilt

The 4 scrappy 16-patches corner blocks are done

The small 4-patches - measure 2.5" square - for the second border is done; 72 out of 72!

************

Mini-Dwellings is UFO #25 on my UFO/WIP list

The small house block has been sitting on my sewing table for weeks. The idea is to make a small wall hanging, but I wanted to add that little extra to make ...

Basket Quilt UFO - WIP from Grandma's Red Needle

It took me some days deciding on how to do the basket blocks, since I was not that eager to do the original block design. Then I saw Melva's beautiful Basket block and knew right away my blocks need a 'flower pot'!

I think the left one looks much better and I decided on that design.
I also get to use up my basket weave fabrics that have been sitting on the shelf for some years! What I don't use for the blocks, will be used for a pieced backing. I made 5 of the design to the ...

Coffee With Dad - An RSC Flimsy, Another WIP from Grandma's Red Needle

As the title says; Coffee with Dad is a Flimsy!
Viola at Familie Barwitzki challenged me to work on my UFO #26, since 26 is her birthday. Now that Swirling Stars is on hold, waiting (forever! due to shipping error from the online shop!) for ordered quilting thread, I accepted the challenge.

In my previous post I mentioned I had too many blocks for one quilt.
That is absolutely not true! I don't know where my head was, or better say brain (it must have melted in the heat these days!), when I figured out I need 36 coffee ...

Basket Quilt from Fret Not Yourself

When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.
~Maya Angelou

Quilting

Quilted, bound, washed, and ready to gift. The basket quilt turned out better than expected. Jinny Beyer's books are my main reference but I can't find this five-patch basket in them. Although I sketched it on my own, I'm sure it has a name. I just don't know it.

The border blocks began this quilt. You could say it was designed like a kawandi - from the outside in. With that set, I had to plan something for the center. I love ...

Crossroads and Baskets from Fret Not Yourself

Hang on to your hat. Hang on to your hope. And wind the clock, for tomorrow is another day.

Quilting

I'm still avoiding BB2 but eventually I'll get to work on it. Currently I chose to work with the red Crossroad border blocks. {No. It's still not the end. Sheesh.} Remember they didn't work well with the orange and brown squares on BB2. Audrey's many baskets inspired me to try one of my own. As usual I thought about appliqué and chickened out.

I designed the baskets to {almost} fit inside the ...

Look What I Found! from Podunk Pretties

Hello Quilty Friends!  Let's start the new week with a new project.  Well, it's not really new, it's a UFO.

It took some digging to find her. Over the last couple of years there's been a lot of rearranging going on here in the studio.   After about an hour of searching, I sat in my sewing chair wondering if I had  accidentally tossed her in the trash or donated it along with unloved fabric.  And then I saw the white plastic baskets in my little green cabinet.  That's where I hid these little lovelies!  Thank ...

Happy Valentines Day! from Humble Quilts

My heart is full and I feel very blessed! Thank you all for being a part of my life, online and in person! You all enrich my life immensely!

A reader made a suggestion to replace a couple of strings on the basket, but I'm still stuck moving forward.

Using the background as a border gives me the illusion of a window.

checkerboard on the right, pretty fabric on the left. Neither is working for me.
Maybe I'll just leave it as a top to bring to class.
Speaking of class.. thank you to those who passed the ...

Friday Fun! from Humble Quilts

I've lost track of my days so snapped this photo quickly this morning.
It needs a good pressing!

I do like this better with the string border.  Not sure what comes next.

Many of you suggested a plainer, narrow border before adding the strings. I didn't have a solid red in the FG hue, but wasn't feeling the love on this one.

Thank you all for your suggestions!

We got off grid for a couple of days this week. If you aren't on my Facebook group you can be! It isn't super active but I ...

Basket Case String Block from Humble Quilts

This basket block has been on my design wall waiting for inspiration.

So I made a string border and don't like it at all.

Then I played around with another fabric. Still not loving it.

I do adore the border fabric, just not like this.

Then while in bed I had a thought.....

Maybe what I really don't like is that first border. So far I like it with the string border first.

I'd love your thoughts- please chime in!

The next few photos are from the last few days. We have been having a horrible inversion- ...

New England Quilt Musem from Humble Quilts

I was fortunate to be able to visit the New England Quilt Museum in 2022 and 2023. Lowell, MA is a town with so much history. The west coast is young and I do appreciate the differences in areas of the USA. The above photo is now apartments but used to be a fabric mill.

The New England Quilt Museum is in a wonderful historic building.

Lowell, MA

Beginning September 12 and running through December 30 the special exhibit will be

Basket Case! from Humble Quilts

I finally finished by little baskets on cheddar. I love it! I call it Basket Case and it measures 14"x15".

I'll be doing a class next month and I feel like all 3 of the basket quilts are very different and hopefully inspires everyone to make what they want!

I tried a little creative photography- haha not my strong point!

PeekaBoo Elsa!

I used a fun print for the backing I picked up last time we were in Hawaii.

I had a really wonderful and relaxing holiday weekend. I am so appreciative of all of those who have ...

Bounty of Baskets from Humble Quilts

My basket runner is complete! I really love it. I kept the quilting simple and I like that it compliments the baskets and there isn't so much quilting that is takes away from the applique design. I'll be teaching this class this summer in Dayton, Oregon. It should be fun!

Let's have a great week!

Quilting Plan ~ Scrap Buster Baskets ~ UFO from Podunk Pretties

For the last couple of weeks my Scrap Buster Basket quilt has been hanging on the design wall patiently waiting for me to decide on a quilting plan.

She's such a cute, happy little quilt and is eager to strut her stuff as a completed quilt.

Many hours have been spent on Google, Pinterest and Facebook quilting groups looking for the perfect new quilting design.  The time finally has arrived, she's off the wall and on the table, covered with plastic so I can test out the new quilting plan using a RED dry erase marker on the ...

Basket Quilt UFO back in the closet, or not? from Grandma's Red Needle

Does it happen to you? You pull out a project / UFO from the shelf or closet for so to get it back in to where it was? Yesterday was my turn! Why?

I don't remember when I decided on fabric and made two blocks for this quilt.

Photo from the magazine

What I know is I received the magazine (Marvellous Machine-Made Quilts) from an ex-pen pal in New Zealand in 2008. The magazine does have some great quilts and I have made these; Colorado Star (made two quilts for our sofas) and Split Hourglass quilt. It was sew fun ...

Quilt Guild and Online Class from Humble Quilts

I was talking to my friend in Ohio and she feels like I need to come back and take my quilts on the road again! We did this in 2019 and had so much fun!!  She is located  in Ashtabula, which is fairly close to the PA border.  If you have any "pull" with your guild please suggest I come for a visit. If we can get enough guilds the travel costs would be very low. I believe in 2019 I visit 5 quilt groups! It was so much fun! Shoot me an email at humblequilts@gmail.com if you ...

Summer Baskets from Humble Quilts

I got a little chance to work on my basket project. The setting is what will make it unusual. I'm copying an antique quilt. I hope it works out like I imagine!

These were in with my blues. Does anybody know if this is Japanese writing?
And does it actually say anything?

And which direction would it go?

Any thoughts?

Thanks! Let's make it a great week!

Fun on Friday from Humble Quilts

Here's my "Not new project" LOL Pieced with appliqued handle was the preferred vote, but looking back on the original antique, the handles were wide and chunky and I don't think I could have done a good job with that same look using applique. Hey, you never know, I may do another one that is pieced! LOL  The lighter blue and hand dyes were done in a class with Lori Triplett in Houston. You can see that post HERE- scroll down to see what I dyed and what I purchased in class.  Some of you asked if I ...
